It falls back to the parent product's gallery. You can assign galleries to as many or as few variants as makes sense — variants without their own gallery just show the product default.
The Variation Gallery System loads a small CSS/JS file on product pages when enabled. Everything else in Bossy is admin-only. The script is lightweight — it intercepts WooCommerce's variation change event and swaps the gallery data. No additional API calls on the storefront.
